The
Chihuahua Teacup Myth
The
official A.K.C. Breed Standard describes the Chihuahua
as a small dog that comes in only two varieties or coat
types. The only official difference is a Long Coat or
Smooth Coat. The A.K.C. does not categorize the Chihuahua
by its size.
Unfortunately
many people incorrrectly describe a very small Chihuahua
as a "Teacup". Some breeders even use the term
as a way to charge more for a puppy, tricking buyers into
believing a "Teacup" is more valuable. They are
not and the use of "Teacup" is misleading.
Sometimes in a litter, there is a puppy that is very very
tiny. This is simply a small, or runt Chihuahua and to
misrepresent the small puppy as another breed or type
of Chihuahua is very wrong.
Many times these smaller dogs are unhealthy and require
extra care. These very small Chihuahuas tend to have greater
health risks. Their bones are fragile, there is not enough
room in their small mouths for proper tooth growth and
their internal organs are often very weak. They tend to
have a lot of health problems and have problems regulating
their blood sugar levels which may cause seizures and
even death. Often they live a few months or years and
then their owners wake up one morning to discover that
their beloved Chihuahua has died of sudden heart or organ
failure.
Some breeders will even stoop to the level of breeding
two small and sometimes unhealthy Chihuahuas in order
to try to produce "Teacups".
Remember, there is no such thing as a "Teacup"
Chihuahua. There is ONLY CHIHUAHUA.
Here at Chiuahua Sweaters, we support adopting Chihuahuas
that need a home instead of buying from a breeder, so
